Mazda . question for a mechanic about shocks/suspension, any help/insight is appreciated? question for a mechanic about shocks/suspension, any help/insight is appreciated? hi please only serious experienced answers if possible, this is very serious to me. anyway, i drive a 2000 chevy impala ls. over the last few months a strange, almost *knocking on wood* type sound has been coming from the driver side rear suspension/shock. this hasn't really been an issue at all in the vehicles drive-ability however in the recent weeks the sort of *knocking* sound has become louder and more pronounced with every bump on the road, its even getting to a point that its making an ever so slight *knocking* sounds even if i go over a small rock or stone. now, i'm not the most tech-savy person and i'm also not the richest, the problem isn't that i can't just go to a mechanic or shop and ask for a repair, it's that i can't go in and have them up-sell me like its happened in the past. (this one time a dealer told me my breaks were totally worn down when just the other month i had them all replaced at another shop so it wouldn't have been on GM's "record" of work and when i asked to see the rotors the mechanic brought me a drum brake that would have probably gone on a truck, luckily for me i know a little something about cars, but my expertise ends at common knowledge) i'm afraid of what this damage could be and i don't want to put my family in any sort of danger by continuing to drive unfortunately it is our only mode of transportation and way to and from work, at the same time however my family cannot afford any unnecessary financial burdons, if it must be fixed than i will, but only what must be fixed. im going to link a few photo's if it at all helps in determining the exact cause. my hope is that i can go to a number of dealers with a defense ready for if and when they may attempt to offer to fix more than i really need. once again any help is greatly appreciated. thank you Daniel http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769596/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769404/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769074/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665201629/in/photostream thanks again. car insurance. Mazda . How to Replace a Muffler on a 1998 Ford ExplorerIf you notice that your 1998 Ford Explorer sounds louder than usual, it could be the muffler, which is part of the vehicle's exhaust system. The muffler has two distinct jobs. The first is to reduce noise made by the engine, and the second is to expel engine gases behind the vehicle. Wear and tear and rust are two common reasons a muffler might need to be replaced. Replacing a muffler is a relatively easy job that can be done in a short period of time. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Car jack Jack stands Metric wrench set OEM muffler #F77Z5230AJ or #F77X5230BJRemoving the Muffler Step by Step : 1 Raise the rear end of the vehicle and support it with jack stands. 2 Loosen and remove the two spring bolts securing the muffler. Loosen the exhaust clamp. 3 Disconnect the right-hand torsion bar link. Remove the nut and position the torsion bar link out of the way. 4 Pull the rear support side out of the rubber insulator. Pull the double support slides away from the insulators. 5 Twist the muffler while sliding it toward the rear of the vehicle and over the rear axle until you have removed it. Installing the Muffler Step by Step : 1 Guide the muffler over the rear axle and twist it into position. 2 Apply lubricant to the support slides. 3 Push the double support slides and the rear support slide into the rubber insulators. 4 Position the right-hand torsion bar and reinstall the nut and hanger. 5 Install and tighten the two spring bolts and tighten the clamp. Raise the Explorer above the jack stands. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
Mazda . How to Put in a Battery 6.5 in a Remote Car StarterRemote car starters have become common features on cars around the world. They are used to start your cars ignition remotely, and can be used almost everyday by most drivers. Because of the frequency of use, the small batteries in the remotes tend to wear out very quickly. You can replace the batteries in your remote car starter in just seconds without any equipment or experience. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Knife or screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Use a knife or screwdriver to pry open the remote case. You can do this by running the blade along the crease in the remote, between the upper and lower sections of the case, to loosen it. 2 Lodge the blade into one spot on the case and pry it open gently. 3 Notice the position and placement of the battery and then remove it from its compartment in the remote. 4 Place the new battery in the same position and lower the small holder flap back into place. 5 Snap the battery case back together and your remote will be ready for use. If you're considering having your vehicle undercoated (or doing it yourself), consider these points: If rust is already present on the underbody, undercoating simply locks the rust away, where it continues its insidious work unseen. So before you have your car undercoated, make sure that it's absolutely rust-free. If it isn't, have all the rust removed and a rust arrestor used to destroy any rust that may have been overlooked, and then have the undercoating applied. If your vehicle is fairly new and hasn't begun to rust, having it under-coated still may be a good idea, especially if you live in a snowy area. Make sure that they treat the underside of the car with a rust arrestor first, just to be sure, and that the undercoating won't void any warranties. Many new vehicles come with undercoating as part of the package; this option is fine and worth bargaining for. If undercoating is an "optional extra," you may find it cheaper to have the work done by an independent professional undercoating shop. Get an estimate of costs before you deal for the car so that you know where the best deals are, and make sure that the outside work won't void any warranties. Spray undercoatings designed for amateur use are probably better than nothing, but continue to watch closely for rust after applying them. If you decide to try one of these spray undercoatings, work in a well-ventilated area. Don't spray the undercoating (or anything else, for that matter) on any cables, pipes, or parts under the car that get hot; otherwise, they'll smell awful when the heat hits the undercoating. And before you use the stuff, remove every bit of rust and coat the surfaces with rust arrestor. Removing. Smalt Bents and binqs Although you need special tools and equipment to yank, hammer, or other wise coax large dents back into place, taking care of little dents and dings is another matter. Chevrolet HHR. * Part V: He| in g Your Car Look lts Best p not require much work at all. You have nothing to lose by trying to do minor bodywork yourself. If you fail, you can always take the car to a body shop anyway! Here are some situations that you may want to tackle: i*0 If the paint has simply flaked or has been scratched off the surface, follow the instructions for touching up paint later in this chapter. Before you prime and paint the vehicle, take care of any rust, dings, or dents that you find. By taking care of all these things at once, you can then put the final coats on all of them at the same time and have a car that looks wonderful. c* If the metal has been pushed in and hasn't been badly creased, you can try to pop the metal back into place with a rubber plunger (the kind they call a plumber's helper). Just moisten the edge of the rubber, place the plunger over the dent, establish suction by pressing down on the handle, and then pull it toward you. It may take a couple of tries before the metal pops back to normal. This technique works especially well on large expanses of metal, such as doors and fenders, if they have only been bent inward. u0 If you have small dents, you can attempt to hammer them out by placing a flat piece of metal (with a rag wrapped around it to protect the paint from scratching) on the outer side of the car and banging the dent from the underside with a flat-ended hammer. Be very careful to bang the underside of the dent only, and not the surrounding area, or you'll end up with a couple of new bumps to deal with. Work from the shallow sides of the dent toward the deeper areas and avoid overworking the metal, which stretches it. v* If you have very small dings or places where the paint has chipped, you can fill them in with glazing putty, which is very easy to handle. Use a putty knife to apply it, following the directions on the package, and then prime and paint the area. If the damaged area is larger than a very small, shallow ding, you need to resort to a plastic body filler. The next section tells you how to use one. The new specialty shops that just fix dents and dings are inexpensive. Take Mazda . What type of car do you usually sit in the back of?
